If done in a single day, the 32km (10 hour) Westmeath Way Walk is a long strenuous walk from Kilbeggan to Mullingar or vice versa. The town of Kilbeggan is famous for its whiskey distilling and horse racing and the town of Mullingar is the administrative centre of the county. The route follows a section of the River Brosna, public roads (41%) and visits the townsland of Lilliput on the shores of Lough Ennell. Jonathan Swift is said to have stayed with friends on the lake’s shore and used the name for his fantasy island in his famous book Gulliver’s Travels. Nearer Mullingar the route is by road, fields and woodland path to reach the north end of the lake. From there its by road and canal tow path into Mullingar along a section of the Royal Canal Way walk.
