In 1860 Athenry became a junction with the opening of the line to Tuam. Anthenry had been an operating station since 1851 with the Midland Great Western Railway bulding the station outside the medieval town walls.  In 1869 the Ennis line was completed and Athenry now became very important railway town for passengers and freight from all directions. Opening up the line has recently been considered so the development of the line as a potential walking/cycle route is probably not going to be considered as the demand for a formal rail service exists.
