The climb to Carrauntoohil via the Stumpa an tSaimh Ridge and Beenkeragh is a difficult but rewarding 5 hour (11 km) route starting from the traditional Cronins Yard to the west of Killarney, Co. Kerry in the south west of Ireland. Some may find this route a little 'hairy' at times and it isn't for the faint hearted but there are great views in all directions and you get a unique view of Carrauntoohil that many never see. It requires some very careful scrambling on the Stumpa an tSáimh Ridge to reach the summit of Beenkeeragh (1,010m) and then continue the narrow ridge, The Bones and onto the summit of Carrauntoohil (1,040m). The return walking route is via the glorious if not sometimes difficult to find Heavenly Gates route.

It is only a short drive to the car park in Cronins Yard from Killarney town. There are plenty of other routes to suit walkers and climbers of all experience, from beginners to advanced on the Reeks, so please find a route that is right for you or your group. Plan your walk by checking the weather,  sunrise sunset times and our hiking checklist on our website https://www.activeme.ie/useful-info/planning-a-trip/. Please remember that you are only as fast as the slowest member of your group!

Use our Map of Ireland and Sat Nav tool to get directions to the start point and our detailed maps and GPS on our ActiveME iPhone App and Android App to find and follow the walking route live on screen and keep on track. At all times, our maps and App should be used in conjunction with proper map and compass navigation techniques.
