In 1906 the Great Northern Railway company opened an extension from Ballyroney to Castlewellan which connected Banbridge with the new Belfast and County Down Railway branch line to Newcastle, County Down. Banbridge had its own railway station from 1859 until 1956 when it closed.

With the recent tourism success of the Great Western Greenway cycle and walking route from Westport to Achill in Mayo, many other disused railway lines in Ireland are now under consideration for tourism upgrades.

Since 1956, much of this route has been removed by the adjacent farmers and landowners over the years. Therefore following the route would be both difficult and in parts would possibly be on farming lands.
