Oilean Ruaidh (Red Island) or the anglicised name Island Roy is a small island in Mulroy Bay near the village of village of Carrigart, in the north west of Co Donegal, Ireland. The island can be reached by causeway road except at high tide and it is a Discovery Point on the Wild Atlantic Way.
Originally known as Oilean na Bbhreighe (Island of the Prisioners) in the past, its present name, Oilean Ruaidh (Red Island) is because of the colour of the vegetation in winter. Island Roy was the English name given by surveyors in the 19th cent. This secluded island is the ideal place for nesting birds and wildlife and a great place to spend a relaxing day walking and taking in the views.
