Cooley is the site of a Early Middle Ages monastery founded by St. Finian in the 14th century and is well worth a visit. Referenced in the Annals of the Four Masters, the monastery paid a tax of forty shillings, which indicates that it was a thriving place in the 14th Cent. There are the ruins of an ancient church, the 10ft high Cooley Cross which is uncarved suggesting it was pre-christian and the Skull House which resembles beehive huts or cells for monks of the time.
