Union Wood Nature Reserve is located in County Sligo in the north west of Ireland and belongs in part to the National Parks and Wildlife Service and part to Coillte.  It contains one of the largest remaining native Oak Woodlands in the area where mammals like the Pine Marten, Red Squirrel, Badger, Fox, Bats and Fallow Deer live.  Birds life in teh area includes Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff, Jay, Raven, Goldcrest, Treecreeper, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk. Buzzards are occasionally seen soaring over the trees.  A good insect population live on the dead wood, native trees  and the nearby wetlands, lakes and river, including beautiful butterflies and dragonflies.  Apart from Sessile Oak, other trees include native Ash, Scots Pine, Downy Birch, Holly, Rowan, Hazel, Hawthorn and Blackthorn.
On the east of the Nature Reserve is Ballygawley Lough which has a man made Crannog at the centre of the lake.  There are plenty of paths and walks to enjoy the reserve and Bird Watching is a very popular pastime here.
