The Monaghan Way walk is a 64km-long (18 hour) National Waymarked Trail that links Monaghan town with the pretty village of Iniskeen via the town of Castleblaney. Its passes close to the birthplace of poet and novelist Patrick Kavanagh near Iniskean. 44km of the route is on narrow side roads but has about 9km on main road. The remainder of the route is on woodland paths, fields and a variety of terrain, including short lakeside stretches and pleasant stretches along the River Fane and an old disused railway line.
