The ancient children's burial ground in Kells, Co. Kerry is now also a Garden of Remembrance. Known locally as the 'Ceallunach', it has been the resting place of unbaptised babies for many centuries past.

The Ceallunach which was an unconsecrated burial ground has it's roots in the days of hardship, poverty and famine. It was a time of penal laws and people being evicted from their homes. It may well go back to the mid-sixteenth century. It may also have it's origins in the Catholic Church's teachings on Limbo.

In Catholic teaching at that time was the belief that an unbaptised baby that died was not entitled to enter Heaven because the baby or the unborn had done nothing to deserve to get into Heaven without doing their own good works and actions.
