The stunning Kylemore Abbey is a Benedictine monastery founded in 1920 on the grounds of older Kylemore Castle in Connemara (near Clifden), County Galway in the west of Ireland. This picture perfect Abbey is located on the lower slopes of Doughruagh mountain (526m) on the shore of Lough Poll an Chaipall (The Horses Hole Lake!). It is very hard to take a bad picture of this place so do enjoy.

You can visit the castle, the Gothic church, 6 acres of Victorian Walled Garden and other walks on the grounds so there are plenty of things to do for young and old. Please note you have to pay an entrance fee but this goes to the upkeep of the estate.

Kylemore Castle was built in 1867 as a private home for the family of Mitchell Henry, a wealthy doctor from London. In 1920 the Irish Benedictine Nuns purchased the Abbey castle and lands after they were forced to flee the bombed city of Ypres, Belgium during World War I after several hundred years in Ypres. The nuns opened an international boarding school and established a day school for local girls but this has since closed in 2010. The previous owners, the Henrys, are buried on the grounds in a mausoleum.
