The entire Dublin Mountain Way is a moderate to strenuous 1 to 3 day (40 km) long distance walking trail close to Dublin City in the Dublin Mountains. This scenic and varied walk is becoming a popular National Waymarked Trail in Ireland and suits walkers from beginners to experienced. The walking route officially begins in Shankill in south Dublin, through the Dublin Mountains and ends in Tallaght in west Dublin but it can be done in either direction and you can join the walking route at any number of points along its length. There are also a number of loop walk options along the way for those want to return to the start point and these can increase the length of the trail to 74 km. The entire route developed by the Dublin Mountains Partnership is typically broken down into 8 stages of equal length (shown below and at the bottom of the page) to allow everyone irrespective of fitness or time available to experience one of the newest waymarked trail in Ireland. The trail is well signposted with the universal yellow ‘walking man’ symbol and directional arrows to show you the way.  The route consists of mountain trails, country paths through fields and forests and quiet side roads . The route has much to offer with many attractions and interesting places to see, plenty of things to do and nice places to stay along the way.

Hiking from East to West the 6 main stages include:

  • Stage 1 - Shankill to The Scalp (Barnaslingan)
  • Stage 2 - The Scalp (Barnaslingan) to Cruagh (long option)
  • Stage 2 - The Scalp (Barnaslingan) to Glencullen
  • Stage 3 - Glencullen to Cruagh
  • Stage 4 - Glencullen to Fairy Castle Loop Walk
  • Stage 5 - Cruagh to Fairy Castle Loop Walk
  • Stage 6 - Cruagh to Glenasmole
  • Stage 7 - Massy's to Hell Fire Spur Route
  • Stage 8 - Glenasmole to Tallaght
