Midland Great Western Railway from Athlone to Mullingar formed part of the main route between Dublin, County Galway and County Mayo until 1987, when Córas Iompair Éireann (CIE) closed the line and severing the rail link between Athlone and Mullingar. A number of Action Groups are nowcalling for the reopening of the rail link as vital to the expansion of the economy of the "Midland Gateway".

On 2nd October 1848 the first train arrived in Mullingar. The Mullingar and Athlone Railway Stations were designed by the architect J. S. Mulvany. If not reopened as a functioning railway line, this section of disused railway may have the potential to be developed as a walking/cycle route.
