Clare Island at the entrance to Clew Bay was the home of the pirate queen Grace O'Malley and is a Discovery Point on The Wild Atlantic Way. It is rich in archaeological remains and has medieval wall-paintings in the 14th century Abbey. Old potato ridges are clearly visible from the Famine times and visitors can see Granuaile’s (Grace O'Malley) Castle, the 12th century Cistercian Abbey, the Lighthouse, the Napoleonic Tower and Bronze-Age sites. With a population of up to 150, it is the ideal place for hiking and swimming and a great place to relax for food and refreshments too. The island can be accessed by ferry from Roonagh Pier and the journey takes 25 minutes. Other Islands in the bay include Inisturk, Caher, Achillbeg, Inishbofin and Inishshark.
