Charles Fort is a star fort located on the water's edge in Kinsale Harbour with James' Fort on the opposite side of the harbour.

Named after Charles II it was built in the 1670s in a star design to ward off attack by cannon. It is one of the largest military installations in the country, It is associated with events in Irish History such as the Williamite War of 1689-91 and the Civil War 1922-23. Charles Fort was declared a National Monument in 1973.
