The Bone and Zig Zag route is moderate to strenuous 5 hour (14km) loop walking route takes in the summit of Carrauntoohil and is one of the safest ascents and decents on the MacGillycuddy Reeks, county Kerry in the south west of Ireland. Due to recent erosion on the Devils Ladder, there has beed an increased use of the Zig Zags (Bóthair na Gige). This has in turn made the Zig Zag route easier to find and follow as a more obvious path is worn in. People consider this both a good and a bad thing.

This route also requires some minor scrambling when coming down or going up The Bone. You can also do this route in reverse, Up the Bone and down the Zig Zag.

There are plenty of other routes to suit beginners to advanced walkers on the Reeks, so please find a route that is right for you or your group. Plan your walk by checking the weather, sunrise sunset times and our hiking checklist on our website https://www.activeme.ie/useful-info/planning-a-trip/. Please remember that you are only as fast as the slowest member of your group! It is also better completed after a spell of dry weather and allow plenty of time.

Use our Map of Ireland and Sat Nav tool to get directions to the start point and our detailed maps and GPS on our ActiveME iPhone App and Android App to find and follow the walking route live on screen and keep on track.  Our maps and Apps are only a rough route guide and at all times should be used in conjunction with proper map and compass navigation techniques. You are also advised to take into account the weather and have permisson to access the lands. Feel free to send us your photos and add you own star rating, comments or suggestions below.
