The loop walk to the summits of Carrauntoohil (1,040m) and Beenkeragh (1,010m) via Cummeenagearagh Gully on the northern side of the MacGillycuddy Reeks is a strenuous to difficult 5 to 6 hour (12.5 km) walking route which returns via the glorious if not sometimes difficult to find Heavenly Gates route. This route does requires some mountain experience and there is some difficult scrambling in the Cummeenagearagh Gully. On the other hand it is one of the most interesting walks on the Reeks and offers you some of the least seen but great views of Beenkeragh and Carrauntoohil.

It is not one of the most popular routes to the summit but as with all the Reeks walks, it is only a short drive to the car park at Lisleibane from Killarney town which is in the south west of Ireland in County Kerry.

There are plenty of other routes to suit beginners to advanced walkers, so please find a route that is right for you or your group. Plan your walk by checking the weather,  sunrise sunset times and our hiking checklist on our website https://www.activeme.ie/useful-info/planning-a-trip/. Please remember that you are only as fast as the slowest member of your group!

Use our Map of Ireland and Sat Nav tool to get directions to the start point and our detailed maps and GPS on our ActiveME iPhone App and Android App to find and follow the walking route live on screen and keep on track. At all times, our maps and App should be used in conjunction with proper map and compass navigation techniques.
