The Miners Way (41km) and Historical Trail (72 km) are combined long distance walking routes that take in the rolling hills and valleys of counties Roscommon, Leitrim and Sligo, Ireland. The entire walking route is a moderate National Waymarked Trail taking on average 6 days to complete and is approximately 113 km long.

The walking route can begin in Dowra, Boyle or Arigna and follows many of the paths used by miners going to work in the Arigna Mines. The Miners Way links with the Historical Trail which traverses the Curlew, Bricklieve & Arigna Mountains, passing many features of interest including Carrowkeel megalithic tombs, Labby rock, wind farms, Sequoia Trees & the Bricklieve Mountains. The rough terrain & breathtaking scenery is spectacular and this is matched historically by the largest concentration of passage tombs in Ireland, believed to have been constructed between 3000 and 2000 BC.

The Miner's Way itself is a 41Km circular walk between Lough Allen and Ballyfarnon which follows many of the paths which were taken by the miners on their way to work in the numerous old coal mines in the area. Together with the Historical Trail it forms an extensive network of walking trails in northern County Roscommon. The highest point on the trail is the Curlew mountains at 818 ft. The Lough Key Forest & Activity Park boasts unique attractions and trails. The 350 hectare estate contains many historical walks through the 19th Century Parkland.

Typically the entire trail is broken down into 6 key stages of approximate equal length or duration. We have also broken some of these longer stages into smaller parts (13 different walks) to allow everyone irrespective of fitness or time available to experience one of the best and varied walks in Ireland.

Use our Map of Ireland and Sat Nav tool to get directions to any point on the walk and our detailed maps and GPS on our ActiveME iPhone App and Android App to find and follow the walking route live on screen and keep on track. At all times, our maps and App should be used in conjunction with proper map and compass navigation techniques.
